Spotted: Bigotry in the US. Have the US moved beyond intolerance?

In two days from now, Obama could become the first non-white American President. In US media, Obama is referred as a black American, which is strange as being the son of a black father and a white woman, he’s at least as white as black. Anyway, despite the fact that the polls are so far in favor of Obama, I am not entirely sure about his victory yet. Could reminiscence of US racism prevent American citizens from casting their ballots for Barack Obama at this decisive time?

Anyway, it is said that 90% of black Americans will vote for Obama, which shows that part of these Americans base their voting decision on skin color, a clear indication that for them, skin color is still an issue in the US.

Many conservatives have attacked Obama by pretending that he’s a Muslim, suggesting American people would open the White House’s doors to a terrorist. In the last weeks, reactions on blogs were sometimes very nasty, and the middle name of Obama, Hussein, was added to his name to discuss his patriotism. Obama denied being a Muslim, but both Democrats (including Obama himself) and Republicans (at the exception of Collin Powell) forgot to say that in America, the proclaimed country of Freedom, it should not be an issue to be a Muslim to become a President.

So what role will play bigotry in the next election? The result could be tighter than expected. Anyway, whatever happens, the next President will be so much better than the current one!

XoXo
